Dave’s passion for wine has taken him across the globe – from California to Germany and back home to New Zealand, where he is now celebrating his 16th year with Nobilo. It’s this passion that has driven him to become one of the region’s preeminent experts in all things Sauvignon Blanc. From subregional soil types and microclimates to the aromas and flavours of specific vineyards, Dave understands Marlborough and continues to unlock new possibilities of its Sauvignon Blanc grape each vintage.
His journey in winemaking began after earning a degree in horticulture science at Christchurch’s Lincoln University. Dave headed to Hawke’s Bay for his first vintage, unsure of whether to pursue viticulture or winemaking. It didn’t take long for him to decide. “I was hooked on winemaking by lunchtime on the first day,” he says.
After a few vintages in California and a brief stint in Germany, he returned to Hawke’s Bay to work at such leading wineries as Sileni Estate and CJ Pask, but soon set his sights on the world-renowned Sauvignon Blancs of Marlborough. He joined Nobilo as Senior Winemaker in 2002 and, today, leads a team of winemakers to bring out the best quality year after year. In the off-season, Dave can be found heading to Asia, the US, Canada and across the globe to share the Nobilo story with consumers around the world.
