Constellation New Zealand is the proud owner of
many of New Zealand’s
leading wine brands with a history going back over seventy years.
The Selak (1934) and Nobilo (1943) families were 20th century pioneers
in the New Zealand wine industry with beginnings in Kumeu and Huapai
near Auckland. Constellation New Zealand’s head office and North
Island bottling operation is still located at the heritage Nobilo site
at Huapai.
The Nobilo and Selak families helped
lead New Zealand’s wine production into new grape varieties
and wine styles and into sourcing grapes from the now famous growing
regions of Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough. They also gave their
names to two of our leading wine brands, Nobilo and Selaks.
In 1998, following the merging of the
interests of Nobilo and Selaks along with National Liquor Distributors
(an
independent wine
distributor) and BRL Hardy, the new Nobilo Wine Group (NWG)
was listed on the New Zealand stock exchange.
The expanded organisation with two strategically placed wineries,
one
in Auckland and one in Marlborough and the combination of brands,
vineyards and grape supply significantly increased market presence
and accelerated
international positioning and growth of the brands.
In 2000, BRL Hardy acquired all the shares in Nobilo Wine Group .
This resulted in a substantial vineyard and winery expansion programme
being started and the company quickly became the second largest wine
company in New Zealand and, with BRLH’s international distribution,
became New Zealand’s second largest wine exporter.
In 2003, Nobilo Wine Group was acquired by Constellation
Brands Inc the worlds largest wine business. Located in Rochester,
NY State, USA Constellation Brands is a public company listed on the
New York Stock exchange. To find our more about Constellation Brands
Inc go to www.cbrands.com
In 2006 Kim Crawford Wines (KCW) became
part of Constellation Brands Inc interests in New Zealand following
the acquisition
of Vincor
International Inc, the parent company of KCW. The brands and
personalities behind
KCW were well known in New Zealand and around the world being
one of the fastest growing premium and luxury wine producers
in the
New World.
The addition, as well as bringing very strong brands brought
another strategically important Marlborough winery.
In May 2008 the now fully integrated NWG and KCW
business has changed it name to Constellation New Zealand.
