BVE

The story of Barossa Valley Estate is almost unique in the Australian wine industry. It started with the Lutheran settlers who fled Silesia in the 1840s and made a new home, free of religious persecution, in the Barossa Valley. Here, these families made their home and grew the grapes that made this region the powerhouse of Australian wine. But 140 years later, dark times loomed again.

In 1984, the consumption of red wine was waning and the federal government lured growers with handsome subsidies to pull out their ancient Shiraz vines and replace them with Chardonnay. But there were 80 third - and fourth -generation descendants of the original German settlers who refused. Stubbornness became their strength: instead of trying to sell the grapes to winemakers for a pittance, they formed a cooperative and made their own wine. By combining their skills and blending their grapes from across the Barossa’s Valley, they rode out the hard times and built for the future, just like their great-great grandfathers.

Today the cooperative is a 50/50 joint partnership with the Constellation Australia. Operating from the newly built, state-of-the-art winery at Maranaga, it still however controls its own destiny.
